Notes - !SOURCE: A Partial list of the Descendents of Matthew Whipple, the Elder, of Bocking, Essex County, England / Compiled from Divers Sources by Henry Burdette Whipple (High Point, North Carolina, Oct. 1965-1969), 2:19, 24. Lists David as 2nd child.
!SOURCE: Blaine Whipple, 15 Generations of Whipples: Descendants of Matthew Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Abt 1590-1647: An American Story (Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 2007), 2:G130, 2:G234. Lists David as last child of Samuel and Mercy.
!CONFLICT: The book "Families of Western New York" by William Richard Cutter (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1996), p. 259, identifies this David as a descendant of Captain John Whipple of Providence, Rhode Island: David(4), David(3), David (2), David(1), Captain John(0). See RIN 41726.Email from Barbara MacDonald (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 6 Feb 2000, shows that the David who married Joanna is in fact a descendant of the Ipswich Whipples. Barbara writes:
David Whipple and Joanna Whipple are buried in the Jones Cemetery, Duanesburg, New York. David's tombstone reads, "In Memory of David Whipple Who Departed This Life April 11, 1849 Aged 87 Years"
David's tombstone proves that he was born in 1762. Thus, he could not be Cutter's David Whipple who was born July 14, 1740 in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Cutter made lots of mistakes!
Joanna's tombstone reads, "Joanna, Wife of David Whipple Who Departed This Life May 14, 1848 Aged 88 Years" On her tombstone it is Joanna, not Johanna.
I have pictures of the tombstones and directions as to the cemetery's location.
