On April 4, 1881 Daniel Homer Onion made his will, leaving land in Essex Co., NY (and his clothing and other personal property) to his nephew Francis C. Whipple {106567}. (src: Vermont, Wills and Probate Records, 1749-1999)  On the 1850 census, Milton, Chittenden, VT Daniel Onion (b. 1780) is head of a household that includes his son Daniel H. Onion as well as Francis Whipple age 15.  As land was usually passed to blood relatives, I have linked an unknown sister of Daniel H. Oniion as the wife of an unknown Whipple, who are the parents of Francis C. Whipple {106567}.  Per the Find A Grave website, twelve Whipples are buried in the Milton Village Cemetery in Milton, Chittenden, VT, incl. a Bethiah Whipple, wife of Abraham, who d. June 1837--a speculation as to why Francis was living with Daniel Onion who may be his maternal grandfather.

!SOURCE: Email from Beverly H (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple 13 Mar 2018. Born 1834 or 1835 in Chester, VT. "After his mother died, Frank went to live with his (Onion) grandparents in Milton, Chittenden, VT.  When he was grown he found work on a local farm and  in 1862 he enlisted during the Civil War from Milton.  After the war he married and moved to New York."
