      !GOVERNMENT: A signer of the Declaration of Independence, from New Hampshire. A member of the Provincial Congress of New Hampshire in 1775, and of the Continental Congress, 1776-1779.

      MILITARY: General of one of the brigades of New Hampshire troops in 1777, serving at the battle of Stillwater and Saratoga, and one of the two representatives of General Horatio Gates who arranged the terms of capitulation at the surrender of John Burgoyne, and assisted General John Sullivan at the siege of Newport in 1778.
